Why Joe?Councilmember Joe Goethals is the right person to continue to lead San Mateo into its next era. He's a native son who played Little League in our great parks and grew up in our great schools. He knows how important it is to honor San Mateo's past, but is ready to create new opportunities for the next generation.
On this page, you'll see a few of Joe's accomplishments and some of his plans for San Mateo should you honor him with another term on our city council. |
Highlights
101st AirborneJoe visited the 101st Airborne on behalf of San Mateo to receive the highest honor that the Army bestows on a civilian community organization Honorary Member of the Regiment. He had the opportunity to open the Memorial to the Vietnam veterans from our adopted unit, and to share stories with our veterans at their reunion. This is truly one of the most meaningful endeavors that San Mateo participates in as a community and we must resolve to carry on our loving friendship with 101st Airborne - Abu Company!

Japanese Tea GardenJoe celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Japanese Tea Garden in San Mateo with a joyous celebration and Proclamation befitting the occasion. He hosted a delegation from our sister city of Toyonaka, Japan to celebrate the rich history we have together--sharing our cultures in peace and prosperity.

Beresford ParkJoe has worked diligently to bring the Beresford Park and Bay Meadows projects to completion. The Central Park Master Plan is now ready for implementation and Joe will be there to make sure that project gives San Mateo the centerpiece it deserves.

Accomplishments
Peninsula Clean EnergyJoe was a leading force in San Mateo’s adoption of the Peninsula Clean Energy program. PCE allows city residents to choose electricity supplied from clean, renewable sources at competitive rates.
|
Clean Natural Gas PlantUnder Joe’s leadership, San Mateo opened a Clean Natural Gas plant which captures biogas from our waste water treatment plant and turns it into fuel. This investment--secured through a $2 million grant from the California Energy Commission--allows San Mateo to operate its fleet of vehicles at lower fuel costs.

Minimum WageThe San Mateo County Central Labor Council Awarded the City of San Mateo the Community Award for showing leadership in protecting our lowest paid employees with a wage ordinance that reflects the high cost of living and goes further than any other wage ordinance in the county.
|
HousingAs mayor, Joe broke ground on several housing projects that include hundreds of affordable units pursuant to the city's aggressive inclusionary ordinance. San Mateo approved the affordable housing project in Bay Meadows adding 68 units and is currently being built by Bridge. Joe also signed the agreement with HIPhousing for a loan to save affordable units in a housing project in San Mateo with assistance from HEART. Joe is a leader in calling for workforce housing for teachers, nurses, police officers, and firefighters, especially downtown at the former RDA sites on 5th Ave, east of the railroad tracks.

Goals
Traffic CalmingJoe will work with neighborhoods to make infrastructure improvements like visible crosswalks, bulb outs, islands, and speed bumps to keep pedestrians, bicyclists, and kids safe. (Maybe a link to Vision Zero, Sustainable Streets, or the Community Forums on Traffic Calming)
|
Support Our PoliceOne of Joe's main goals is to continue to support our police officers as they address the recent spike in theft crimes around the city, increase traffic enforcement to support our Vision Zero initiative, and engage under-served youth to prevent truancy and gangs.

Flood ControlComplete the North Shoreview levee to protect the North Shoreview and North Central Neighborhoods, remove them from the FEMA flood map, and remove the requirement that they pay thousands of dollars in flood insurance every year.
